The thirtieth is a strange and lovely one to dress for. It is not a wedding, so there is no code to follow. It is not a regular Saturday, so a good top and your best jeans feels like you have not quite shown up. And it is very often not one night at all but a whole weekend: dinner, then somewhere with music, then someone insisting on a swim the next morning.

First, work out which 30th you are going to
Before you choose a single thing, get the answer to three questions. Is it seated or standing? Is it indoors, or partly outside? And is the birthday girl doing something? A woman turning thirty at her own long table in a restaurant is dressing very differently from a woman turning thirty at a warehouse party where she has hired a DJ.
Standing means shoes you can actually stand in and a silhouette that looks good from every angle, because there is no table to hide the bottom half. Seated means the top half does all the work: neckline, shoulders, earrings. Outdoors in a Sydney winter means a real layer, not a shawl you will resent by nine o clock.

This is the most common 30th and the easiest to get slightly wrong, because people dress for the entrance and not the three hours that follow.

Rooftops, warehouses, a friend of a friend with an unreasonably good terrace. Here the mini dress is genuinely the right answer, and the only question is which kind of mini.

Bag: small, hands-free if you can, because you will be holding a drink and hugging people.
The layer is where people fail. In a Sydney winter, a good blazer over a mini dress is not a compromise, it is the outfit. A cropped leather or vegan leather jacket does the same job with more attitude. What does not work is a jacket you will take off in the first ten minutes and then carry all night. Choose one you are happy to be photographed in.

Can I wear black to a 30th?
Yes, and it is often the sharpest choice in the room. The only rule is that black at night needs texture, shine or a good neckline to stop it reading as work clothes. Satin, lace, a cowl, or a keyhole detail all solve it.
What if there is no dress code at all?
Ask the host one question: what are you wearing? Not to copy her, but to calibrate. If she says a slip dress, you know the register. If she says jeans, you now know that a mini dress will make you the most dressed person there, and you can decide whether you like that.
Is a mini dress too young for a 30th?
