Hawaii is one of the few places where a Bondi wardrobe travels almost intact. Same salt, same volcanic light, same rhythm of a day that starts in the water and ends barefoot somewhere with a view. The difference is humidity, and the fact that you will be living out of a bag for a week.
Which is really the whole question. What to wear in Hawaii is less about buying a holiday wardrobe and more about choosing eight or nine pieces that keep re-combining without ever looking like the same outfit twice. Here is how we pack it.
Start with the swim, because everything else follows
You will be in swimwear more than anything else you bring, which makes it the only category worth over-packing. Two suits minimum, three if the trip is longer than five days - one always needs to be drying while the other is being worn, and salt plus volcanic sand is hard on fabric.
What matters in Hawaii specifically is that the suit holds its shape when it is wet for hours at a time. The one cover-up that does everything
The single most useful piece in a Hawaii bag is a cover-up you would be happy to be seen in at lunch. Not a sarong. Something with a shape.
A towelling robe is the format that has taken over here, and for good reason - it dries you on the walk back, it looks intentional over a suit, and it handles the air conditioning shock of walking into anywhere indoors. Linen is the whole strategy
Humidity is the variable that separates Hawaii from a dry-heat holiday. Anything synthetic will let you know about it within an hour. Linen is the answer, and it is the fabric we build every warm-weather packing edit around.
A pair of wide linen trousers, a linen shirt and a linen short will cover more of the trip than you expect. The trousers go from the airport to dinner. The shirt is a cover-up, a sun layer and a jacket depending on the hour. The shorts are the thing you live in between the water and the coffee. Add three or four pieces from tops and tanks in cotton and you have the rest of the daytime wardrobe. Ribbed tanks in white, black and one colour will carry a whole week.
The layer nobody expects to need
Every packing list for a tropical destination underestimates the cold. In Hawaii it comes from three places: the flight, the air conditioning, and altitude if you go anywhere near the volcanoes or up to watch a sunrise. Mornings at elevation are genuinely cold, not mildly cool.
Pack one proper knit. A fine merino or cotton crew from the knitwear edit weighs almost nothing and solves all three problems. Accessories: fewer, better

Rinse your swimwear in fresh water every single evening. Not a rinse in the shower with product running over it - a proper rinse, then flat to dry out of direct sun. Salt, chlorine and sunscreen are the three things that kill good swim, and all three are unavoidable on this kind of trip. Linen wants the opposite of care. Wear it, let it crease, hang it in a steamy bathroom for ten minutes and move on.
The eight-piece version
If you want the shortest possible answer to what to wear in Hawaii: two swimsuits, one midi robe or linen shirt, one maxi dress, one midi dress, wide linen trousers, three cotton tanks, and one fine knit. Add a cap, sunglasses, gold jewellery and two pairs of flat shoes. That is a week, in a carry-on, with nothing you will not wear.

How many swimsuits do I actually need for a week in Hawaii?
Three is the comfortable number, two is the minimum. Anything less and you will be putting on a wet suit at some point, which is the fastest way to ruin the elastic and the mood.
Do I need anything dressy?
One outfit that could handle a nice dinner. Hawaii is relaxed almost everywhere, but most trips include one evening where a resort or a restaurant expects a little more. A midi dress and a flat sandal covers it without needing heels.
What about rain?
It rains often and briefly, particularly on the windward side of the islands. It is warm rain, so nothing waterproof is required - just avoid packing anything that has to be dry-cleaned if it gets wet, and choose fabrics that dry fast.
Is linen too casual for dinner?
No, and it is the fabric most likely to look right in that climate. A well-cut linen trouser with a fitted top reads as considered anywhere in the Pacific. The mistake is cheap linen, not linen itself.
Can I wear black in Hawaii?
Yes. Black photographs beautifully against volcanic rock and dark sand, it hides everything a holiday throws at it, and a black one-piece is the single most useful swim purchase you can make. The only caveat is the middle of the day in full sun, when a lighter tone will genuinely feel cooler.
