There is a particular kind of top that makes an outfit without asking for anything else, and the one shoulder top is the best example we know. Bare one shoulder and the whole line of the body changes - the neck looks longer, the collarbone does the work, and a pair of jeans you have worn a hundred times suddenly reads like an outfit. It is the neckline our Bondi customers reach for when they want to feel dressed without feeling done up, and it is the reason the asymmetric shapes in our in-house label sell out and come back every season. This is our guide to how to style a one shoulder top: which shape, what to wear it with, and how to take it from a Saturday lunch on Hall Street to a dinner at Icebergs without changing.
Why the one shoulder works
A round neck frames the face. A V lengthens the torso. A one shoulder neckline does something different - it draws a diagonal line across the body, and diagonals are the most flattering lines in dressing because they break up symmetry and create movement. It also leaves one shoulder covered, which is why it feels less exposed than a strapless top and more interesting than a tank. The best one shoulder tops are cut close to the body so the asymmetry reads as intentional rather than as a top that has slipped, and the covered shoulder should sit flat without a strap fighting for attention underneath. Everything below is chosen with that in mind.
The shapes we stock
The Chosen by Tuchuzy edit runs a few different takes on the neckline, and each behaves a little differently. The One Shoulder Tank in black and white is the clean version - a fitted rib with a single strap that reads as a basic on the hanger and as something considerably more on the body. It is the one to buy first. The One Shoulder Key Hole Tank in sage adds a small cut-out at the front, which turns a daytime tank into an evening one with no other change. Then there are the twist shapes: the Asym Twist Linen Top in butter is the softest of the group, cut in linen with a twist at the neckline that sits off one shoulder - a summer lunch top before it is anything else. For the after-dark version, the Asym Mesh Long Sleeve Top in black keeps one arm covered in sheer mesh and leaves the other shoulder bare, which is about as much drama as a simple top can carry. All of them live in the Chosen by Tuchuzy tops edit, alongside the rest of the shapes we design in Bondi, and the wider singlets and tanks collection covers the symmetrical cousins.
With jeans: the everyday version
This is the outfit that gets worn most. A one shoulder tank with a high-rise straight or wide-leg jean and a flat sandal is the Tuchuzy woman's default for a weekend lunch, a gallery on Oxford Street or a long walk to Bronte and back that ends at a wine bar. The rule is proportion: the top is fitted, so the jean can be relaxed. A wide leg from the womens jeans edit balances the bare shoulder and keeps the whole look grounded, and tucking the top in - always, with a one shoulder - shows the waist and lets the neckline be the point. Keep jewellery to one ear, or one wrist. The bare shoulder is already the accessory.
With a skirt: the lunch-to-dinner version
When the day is going somewhere, the skirt is the move. A linen mini with the butter twist top is the spring lunch outfit - two soft textures, two warm neutrals, nothing competing. A satin midi with the black one shoulder tank is the same idea after six o'clock, and it is about as easy as an evening outfit gets: one fitted top, one fluid skirt, a heel. The designer skirts edit has the full range of lengths and fabrics, and the Chosen by Tuchuzy skirts collection is where most of the minis and satin shapes we would put with these tops actually live. For a wedding or a cocktail event, the Broach One Shoulder Mini Dress in the Chosen by Tuchuzy dresses edit does the whole thing in one piece, if you would rather not think about separates at all.
Layering it when the weather turns
A one shoulder top does not have to be a summer-only purchase, and in a Bondi spring where the mornings are still cool it is worth knowing how to layer it. A blazer over the top is the smartest version - the asymmetry peeks out at the neckline and the blazer keeps the whole thing office-appropriate. A vegan leather jacket thrown over the black tank is the going-out version, and it is the outfit we would put together for a Thursday drinks that might turn into dinner. Find both in the womens blazers and jackets edits. The trick with layering a one shoulder is to let the layer come off at some point - it is the reveal that makes it worth wearing.
Packing it for a trip
The one shoulder top is one of the most useful things you can put in a carry-on, and it is worth saying why. The fitted rib versions fold to nothing and do not crease. One black tank covers a dinner, a bar and a beach-club lunch on the same trip, with only the bottom half changing. And because the neckline is the detail, you do not need to pack the jewellery, the belt or the extra layers that a plainer top would rely on to feel finished. On a weekend away we would pack the black one shoulder tank and the butter linen twist top together: one for after dark, one for daylight, both back with the same skirt and the same jean. See the rest of the shapes that travel this well in the full Chosen by Tuchuzy collection.
Getting the details right
A few small things make the difference between a one shoulder top that looks considered and one that looks like it needs adjusting. Underneath, go strapless or go without; a visible strap on the bare side undoes the whole point. Hair up or swept to the covered side shows the neckline off; hair down over the bare shoulder hides it. Earrings work best as a single statement on the bare side, or as small studs on both. And sit the top so the strap side is snug - the asymmetry should look like it was designed, because it was. Every piece here is designed in Bondi Beach and ships worldwide, including to the United States, and if you are local, visit us on Hall Street to try the shapes side by side.
Your questions answered
What do you wear under a one shoulder top? A strapless bra, a stick-on cup, or nothing, depending on the fabric. The fitted rib tanks are supportive enough on their own for most people. A strap showing on the bare side is the one thing to avoid.
Can you wear a one shoulder top to work? Yes, with a blazer over it. The neckline reads as a detail rather than a statement under tailoring, and the blazer can come off for dinner afterwards.
Which side should the shoulder be bare on? Whichever side you naturally part your hair away from, so the neckline is not hidden. There is no rule beyond that.
What jeans go with a one shoulder top? A high-rise straight or wide leg, worn with the top tucked in. The fitted top and the relaxed jean balance each other; a skinny jean with a fitted top can look like too much of the same thing.
Is a one shoulder top too much for a casual lunch? Not in the fitted tank versions. With jeans and a flat sandal it is a casual outfit that happens to have a good neckline, and that is exactly the balance we design the Chosen tops for.
