The walk south from Bondi is a year-round ritual, but in winter it becomes something special - whales breaching offshore, benches you can actually sit on, and a salt wind that makes a good knit non-negotiable. Post-walk, there is nowhere better than Gertrude and Alice, the beloved secondhand bookshop and cafe just back from the beach, where you can lose an hour over a coffee and a leaning stack of books. It is the kind of unhurried Bondi morning that winter was made for. We end where the harbour meets the sea. A drive out to Nielsen Park or Camp Cove at Watsons Bay, wrapped up against the cold, is one of the great underrated winter pleasures of Sydney's east. The water is too cold for most, but the view is not - and on another day, the walk between Gordons Bay and Clovelly, with a stop at the Clovelly rock pools, is reason enough to pull on your walking shoes again.
